Waters All Around

We’re at the time of winter where we’re dreading any more dumps of snows, rain or cold weather and are dreaming of basking in the sun and sipping iced tea outside while reading a book. We’re kinda over this whole “cold and dry winter thing”, and we’re ready for our face to stop flaking off every time we touch it.

Hydrating your skin is even more important this time of year than any other season. And while we have many products that can hydrate your scales, there is an even cheaper solution that has been around for decades---actually, centuries.

Water.

Your body is over 60% water, so it’s no surprise to anyone when dermatologists and health specialists tell us that we need to be drinking a good amount of it every single day. Not only for a healthy digestive system, but also because it detoxifies your body. Additionally, it is good for your skin health.

“I’ve found that water makes a big difference in skin health,” says Rachel Nazarian, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist at the Schweiger Dermatology Group in New York City and an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital. “Without adequate water intake, skin appears duller, and wrinkles and pores more prominent.”

That’s why Nazarian recommends giving your skin a steady flow of water: Every day, aim for eight to 10 eight-ounce servings, and spread them out throughout the day as opposed to guzzling them all at once. Your body can only absorb so much water each hour. After that, you’re just going to be visiting the bathroom for no reason because the water will be leaving your system before it even makes its way to your intestines, kidneys, circulation and to your skin. Bottled or tap, it doesn’t matter—granted your city has decent water.

Water is helps to maintain the most skin moisture and deliver essential nutrients to the skin cells. It replenishes the skin tissue and increases its elasticity. This helps delay the appearance of signs of ageing like wrinkles and fine lines.

Drinking enough water also fights back against skin disorders like psoriasis, wrinkles and eczema. It increases the metabolic rate and improves digestive system to flush out toxins from the body. This in turn gives you a healthy and glowing skin.

*whining voice “But it’s so hard to remember to drink waterrrr”. I can already hear so many of you saying that. And only because I said the same thing before I made drinking water a habit. Here’s a few helpful tips to help you remember to drink your precious water.

  1. Have water with every snack and meal.
  2. Choose beverages that have water in them that you enjoy; you're likely to drink more liquids if you like the way they taste. (i.e coffee, tea,
  3. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Their high water content will add to your hydration. About 20% of our fluid intake comes from foods.
  4. Keep a bottle of water with you in your car, at your desk, or in your bag.
  5. Choose beverages that meet your individual needs. If you're watching calories, go for non-caloric
